FERGUS FALLS, MN (October 1, 2003) – StoneL's new Prism Series linear valve monitors have been designed to resolve reliability, resetting, wash down integrity and corrosion resistance problems frequently encountered in pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturing. The monitors are designed to attach directly to sanitary diaphragm and angle valves in the process industries. They are rugged, feature-rich platforms offering a full array of communication and switching options, as well as discrete, integral pneumatic control for single-acting valve actuator operation.
Many pharmaceutical and biotech processes have large numbers of sanitary diaphragm valves that must be monitored and controlled. Conventional monitors used in these applications rely on mechanical switches with complex linkages, which are prone to reliability problems and require frequent resetting. In addition, because control solenoids have not been integrally packaged with the control monitor, they are not sufficiently protected against the heavy wash downs typical in these process environments. So, most have to be located back in control racks, which substantially increases installation costs.
Prism Series features StoneL’s dual module system with field proven reliability in all on/off applications – Namur (intrinsically safe), SST (switching) and VCTs (valve communication terminals). Dual modules have a five-year warranty. VCT protocols include AS-Interface, DeviceNet, Modbus and Foundation Fieldbus. StoneL’s dual modules, with FOUNDATION Fieldbus, feature valve stroke timing, cycle count and maintenance dating. This information is stored in the dual module and may be retrieved by the control system to determine valve system repair or replacement scheduling. Other protocols feature different forms of diagnostics, depending on the protocol functionality.
Solid-state proximity sensors monitor open/closed discrete valve position with precision and reliability. Visual, electronic and mechanical position indication confirm valve and switch status for added safety. No resetting is required because a self-adjusting triggering system provides consistent open and closed indication even with diaphragm compression.
Prism Series valve monitors may be washed down and temporarily submersed with no adverse affects. They are rated NEMA 4, 4x and 6, as well as designed for Class I and II, Division 2 (Nonincendive Equipment) applications. The high-strength polycarbonate enclosure provides excellent corrosion resistance and exceptional temperature stability. An integral pneumatic pilot valve is isolated from environmental contamination, offers high tolerance to dirty air, and enables rapid sanitary diaphragm or angle valve operation. Users may select a solenoid valve for conventional or device bus applications or a piezo valve for Foundation Fieldbus bus powered applications.
